An agreeable and balanced connection between human and nature on the earth is fundamental for the survival of life and development of a country. With approach of time, humans have directly and indirectly meddled with the environment for their own comforts. One of the reasons for contamination of air, water and soil is the manner in which solid waste is being overseen. This solid waste is a problem seen all over the world and is a difficult issue in developing nations, for example, India. The waste generation rates are expanding and the attributes are changing with increase in the population. Urban areas are affected more than the rural areas due to the industries and high living standards. Bangalore is a metropolitan city and hence it is majorly affected by waste management issues.

The city of Bangalore has developed into a metropolitan city within a couple of decades but the waste management system does not have the capacity to keep up with the amount of waste production. Thus, all over the city there are little to enormous deposits of waste. The apathy of the subjects additionally assumes a noteworthy job in this; they accuse the administration and choose not to see that they are the ones creating the waste. As the times advanced, more non-biodegradable material has been added to the standard list of things that make up urban waste, with plastic reigning as one of the biggest causes of pollution. As plastic waste has an endurance for 10 to 20 years, any dump destinations with plastics are littered all the time. If it was organic waste like fruit and vegetable peels etc. it would have been decomposed quickly.

Bannerghatta road:

Due to construction work for Metro going on the Bannerghatta road, there is a large amount of waste generated, some harmful. The sand which was dug up seems to be a dumping ground for passersby who throw their cigarette butts and food wrappers there. A lot of dust is also generated which affects the air as well as soil. There is also the problem of open drains where people throw waste. Solid waste can clog up the drains thus causing the sewage water to leak out and cause foul odor. Moreover, it also becomes a breeding ground for malaria/dengue spreading mosquitoes.

Even though there are garbage bins everywhere, people throw their waste on the streets. Due to the carelessness or neglect in collecting waste by the municipality, the waste bins are overflowing and causing discomfort to the people who live around the “dump” area. There are stray animals like dogs and cows that overturn the waste and cause it to spill on the road. These animals also end up eating the garbage and plastic bags which costs them their life.
This problem of waste is becoming a larger than life issue, especially in a country like India. A large population generates an even larger amount of waste. To overcome this major problem, solutions to it need to be meted out to government officials responsible towards it as well as the public. Dustbins should be kept at all places in the city/town and the waste should be disposed of properly. Dumping or grounding of waste should be avoided because the toxins from these materials can mix with the soil and ground water which causes bio magnification. Although incineration is harmful, it can be done to extremely toxic wastes but away from human inhabited places. Things which can be recycled should be mandated to be recycled; it is one of the safest ways to dispose waste. The widespread campaign of banning plastics is gradually becoming successful but it has not taken full effect. This can be only achieved by replacing plastic with some other material so that it is easy to do away with plastic once and for all. Once the issue of waste is resolved and Mother Earth is glad, this world would be a happy place to live in.

Great effort guys…..keep it up

Great work love. This is a very important issue which has to be spoken about. People do not realise but a major reason for epidemics is because of these land fills and the water bodies that get polluted because of it. Also this causes resistance in many pathogens which makes treatment of common diseases like typhoid and dysentry even more hard.
This is really an eye opener and its beautifully presented. Keep up the work!
